The sluicegates and locks

Al sistema delle conche per far superare alle imbarcazioni un dislivello d’acqua, già in uso in Lombardia da oltre 200 anni, Leonardo apporta il perfezionamento delle porte di chiusura introducendo un portello manovrabile dall’argine al fine di ridurre lo sforzo di apertura.

Leonardo improved the system of locks already in use in Lombardy since the thirteenth century introducing a small door handled from the bank, which reduced the strain to open the sluice

L’originale disegno di Leonardo è conservato nella Biblioteca ambrosiana.

Il foglio, a matita e penna appartiene al periodo milanese ed è databile tra il 1486 e il 1490. In alto è disegnata la draga marittima fornita di ancore e benna escavatrice per la pulizia dei porti.

The original drawing by Leonardo is kept in Milan in the "Bibliooteca Ambrosiana". The drawing in pencil and pen and ink belongs to the period between 1486 and 1490. On top of the drawing there is the drag anchor with a digging bucket ffor the cleaning of the ports.
